چکیده
Driving under the influence of cannabis is an important public safety concern. Drug impaired driving endangers those both inside and outside the driver’s vehicle. Smoking, inhaling or eating cannabis with or without alcohol prior to driving is a common practice and increases the risks of driver impairment, motor vehicle crashes and fatalities. There are also new techniques for administering high doses of the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (e.g. “dabbing” and vaporization of concentrated cannabis extracts in e-cigarettes). THC causes changes in cognitive effects (knowing, thinking, judging, evaluating and planning), and psychomotor effects (coordination, reaction time, motor skills, and tracking).

The effect of cannabis compared with alcohol on driving.
The prevalence of both alcohol and cannabis use and the high morbidity associated with motor vehicle crashes has lead to a plethora of research on the link between the two. Drunk drivers are involved in 25% of motor vehicle fatalities, and many accidents involve drivers who test positive for cannabis. Cannabis and alcohol acutely impair several driving-related skills in a dose-related fashion, ...

Most drugs that affect the central nervous system have the potential to impair driving ability. For many years, alcohol (ethanol) has been the drug of greatest concern, since it is, by far, the most frequently recognized cause of drug-impaired driving. Yet as more therapeutic agents, such as benzodiazepines, are introduced and widely used, and as social use of unsanctioned drugs such as cannabi...
متن کاملThe Influence of Cannabis and Alcohol on Driving – an Assessment using the TRL Driving Simulator
The objective of this research was to provide reliable data, under laboratory conditions, on the impairing effects on driving of cannabis alone, and also in combination with alcohol. It was concluded that driving under the influence of cannabis adversely affects driver performance. The consumption of alcohol, at the relatively low doses used in this study, added to this adverse effect, but not ...

Cannabis, the most common illicit drug identified in motor vehicle crashes, had a higher prevalence than alcohol in drivers’ blood or oral fluid specimens in the US in the 2013–2014 National Roadside Study (1 ). In fact, the percentage of weekend nighttime drivers with measureable -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in blood or oral fluid increased to 12.6%, a 48% increase since 2007 (2 ). Cannabis use...
متن کاملA review of drug use and driving: epidemiology, impairment, risk factors and risk perceptions.
The existing literature on the prevalence of drug driving, the effects of drugs on driving performance, risk factors and risk perceptions associated with drug driving was reviewed. The 12-month prevalence of drug driving among the general population is approximately 4%. Drugs are detected commonly among those involved in motor vehicle accidents, with studies reporting up to 25% of accident-invo...
